Many would say that the premier city for American art is New York. The city overflows with diverse art galleries which offers just about everything an art lover would appreciate. New York art encompasses almost all the styles from impressionism to post-modern sculpture.
Art lovers who visit New York wouldn’t want to miss visiting its wide array of museums which include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) which is probably the most popular of them all. A lot of American cultural movement in the beginning of 1900’s originated in the Big Apple.
MOMA is considered as the premier New York art gallery. Since its opening in 1929, the museum has been the toast of the modern art world. MOMA is the pioneer in bringing into focus the modern art, followed closely by the Guggenheim Museum which opened in 1936. About 80 years later, MOMA’s ambitions and aim as an outlet for new forms of modernist art is still being achieved. The museum houses some of the most important pieces of art forms such as the works of Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Edward Hopper and other iconic American painters. It also holds works from important international artists like Vincent van Gogh, Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dali.
Another interesting landmark is the Guggenheim Museum located at the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Shaped as a white ribbon curled into a cylindrical stack, Guggenheim is considered as one of New York’s finest. Aside from focusing on the main artistic lines, Guggenheim also hosts a wide array of commercial art such as motorcycle exhibits and even Armani suits.
The Metropolitan Museum of Arts is another great venue. You may have known it as the setting of the hit movie “Night at the Museum”. The museum houses multicultural expression of paintings, fascinating Egyptian collection and so much more.
The Whitney Museum of American Art, also known as “The Whitney” houses over 12,000 important works from famous painters. Some other places where art lovers would enjoy visiting include The Brooklyn Children’s Museum, the Skyscraper Museum, and the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum. These plethoras of museums certainly affirm the richness of New York art.
