This is a quick article covering the little mermaid subliminal messages – the assorted hidden pictures and videos you can see in the movie.
This isn’t a big secret, these messages have long been known about, indeed subliminals have been found across a wide range of disney movies over the decades. Often these have an obvious sexual implication, for example hiding the word “sex” in the background of the animation, or maknig brief sexual suggestions, or as you can see in the classic little mermaid film poster- one of the towers is in the shape of a “phalic symbol”.

This subliminal suggestion using the priests crotch was present in the 1989 release of the movie, but since Walt Disney has confirmed that as part of the work that was done done on this to get it ready for the remade DVD release the priest’s private parts were sadly edited out.
Some of the messages may look like a coincidence, but there are a number of benefits to using subliminal messages. Of course they officially deny that it was done on purpose – often their only response is just not to respond at all.
Occasionally disney does get trapped into making a statement if the suggestions are especially strong, however they still keep their cards close to their chests and cover themsleves, saying something to the effect of “this was included by designer without the consent of the disney network.”.
They also tend to remove most of the messages from future releases as they are found, but still skeptics say that Disney is fully aware of the hidden messages, and offer various different reasons for why they are included:

They include sexual messages to help their films appeal to adults – so that the cartoons are not just of interest to children.

Linking the movie in any way to sex makes it more memorable, and more popular, even when done in this slight subliminal fashion.

It has become a regular part of the design process, it’s even EXPECTED to satisfy a trnd of subliminal message hunting which goes on every time a new movie comes out.

They bring an extra level of publicity and create more interest in the movie.
No matter why they were actually included there is no way of denying the existence of such hidden messages!
